James Cracknell OBE is one of Britain’s most successful athletes with two rowing Olympic Gold medals and six World Championships to his name.
Since retiring from International competition James has taken on a number of challenges including rowing across the Atlantic in 2005 with TV presenter Ben Fogle all filmed for the BBC documentary Through Hell and High Water.
Last year, James finished a phenomenal 12th in the Marathon des Sables (making him the highest placed Briton in its 25-year history). He had already entered the race ‘for fun’ when the Discovery Channel decided it was something that needed filming. Subsequently, he turned his attention to a new challenge, James Cracknell Takes on America- racing to cycle, run, row and swim from LA to New York in record time. It was during this trip that James suffered a near-fatal accident after being struck from behind by a truck while cycling through Arizona. After a difficult six-month recovery period, James’ sheer determination and commitment saw him run the Canadian Yukon completing The Coldest Race on Earth.
Not content with extreme challenges, James has also found a natural home in front of the camera as ITV Sport’s all-action reporter, covering the Superbowl in the US, the Rugby 7s in Hong Kong and The Boat Race. James currently writes for The Telegraph and has released two books; James Cracknell’s No-Gym Health Plan and The Crossing- Conquering the world’s toughest rowing race (co-authored with Ben Fogle).
In presentations, James talks about his adventures, the build-up to both Olympics and how they were nowhere near as straightforward as the public seemed to think. He reveals the highs and lows of his training regime, the different characters that make a successful team and what drives him to seek out new challenges.
